Foredraget med tittelen “The Free Software Movement and GNU”.

– sier Hans-Petter Fjeld, styremedlem i NUUG.

Avspark Enter the Endgame

GoOpen Arctic Forum, 6. – 7 March 2013

Openness, sharing, reuse and collaboration have created the Internet as we know it today. We have erased borders, reduced prejudice, opened up access to information and made the world more transparent. Can a more open mentality also in other fields such as environment and development achieve similar results?

The world is facing major challenges and interdisciplinary cooperation is needed to resolve these. Our small contribution is to gather a group of mentors from our field, to clarify the importance of cooperation.

Our goal with GoOpen Arctic Forum is a meetingplace for academic experts and visionaries within different fields. Open innovation, sharing and reuse of knowledge are important in the development of today’s society. GoOpen Arctic Forum gathers the scientific community to share knowledge and experience from the projects within different academic disciplines and to create new ideas and thoughts at the intersection between technology and other disciplines.

Svalbard archipelago with the beautiful arctic nature form a perfect backdrop to GoOpen Arctic Forum, after many months of arctic winter the sun comes back March 8th to Longyearbyen, and we get the pleasure of experiencing the northern lights at night, with the magic of sunlight daytime. Speakers and participants will be able to get close to the wild nature through tours with e.g., snowmobile and dog sled.

There will also be able to visit the seed bank
Svalbard Global Seed Vault is now established in the permafrost in the mountains of Svalbard is designed to store duplicates of seeds from seed collections around the world. Many of these collections are in developing countries. If seeds are lost, e.g. due to natural disasters, war or simply lack of resources, the seed collections may be reestablished using seeds from Svalbard.

How can you participate:
- We would like to invite you as a speaker on the first day (Keynote speaker) and panel participant in the conference’s plenary session of the second day.

Day 1 Keynote
In your post, please show examples of projects that have succeeded in re-use, sharing and open innovation in your field. If possible, we want you to give us your thoughts about what is possible for other disciplines to reuse from experiences you have done in these projects.

Day 2 Discussion
The second day will be debate-style discussions

Topics for discussion:
Can Open Innovation, Open Source and the philosophy, contributing to other disciplines, do something for our global challenges?

Possible topics:

Main topics
· How different research groups using or not using transparency
· Discuss joint interdisciplinary innovation and progress
· Obstacles to openness within different academic disciplines
· How to maintained the principles of an open and free internet

Side topics
· Population growth
· Food shortages and distribution
· Environment
· Economy
· Energy
· Knowledge needs and knowledge sharing

We are now working with the program and other invited guests are:
- Jimmy Wales, founder of Wikipedia
- Tim Berners Lie, founder of the world wide web
- Linus Torvalds, founder of Linux
- Chris DiBona, Google(confirmed)
- Håkon W. Lie, founder of Opera Software(confirmed)
- Leslie Carr, Universety of Southampton
- Walter Bender, Sugar Labs
- Sal Khan, founder of Khan Academy

Other researchers, entrepreneurs and experts are also invited to participate.

Goals of the forum
We want to get an statement from the panel on opportunities and obstacles to progress, using open-innovation.?
We want to get an statement from the panel about the importance (opportunities and obstacles) around transparency?

About Svalbard
The Svalbard Treaty, also known as the Paris Treaty, a treaty signed on 9 February 1920 in Paris from several countries on the Svalbard archipelago. It was entered into in connection with the peace conferences after World War One. First, in 1925 the Treaty of Norwegian sovereignty over the islands laid down in Norwegian law through the Svalbard Act, which regulates Norway’s sovereignty and authority on Svalbard.
The treaty establishes “the full and uindskrenkede høihetsret of Svalbardøgruppen.” The agreement gives Norway sovereignty over Svalbard, Spitsbergen and the surrounding islands, Bjørnøya and Hopen. The treaty states further that all treaty parties should have “equal rights of fishing and hunting” in these areas and in their territorial waters. The provision of equal rights applies after the Treaty reads only within the territorial limit, which then amounted to 4 nautical mil. The question of how far the principle of equal treatment shall apply, however, disputed. [Citation needed]
Besides Norway, signature states, the U.S., UK, Denmark, France, Italy, Japan, Netherlands and Sweden. More than 30 additional states have signed the treaty at a later date, including the Soviet Union in 1924.
The treaty aims to ensure development of Svalbard and the peaceful exploitation of natural resources there. Norway’s sovereignty is limited in such a way that the citizens of any of the states that have signed the Treaty of Svalbard has an equal right to engage in business activities, hunting and fishing in the islands and their territorial waters.
Svalbard is a avmilitarisert zone. In the 1950s the Norwegian government declared Svalbard as neutral territory, with the limitation that NATO was granted the right to intervene if neutrality would be violated in any way.

Social events

As a panel participant of GoOpen Arctic Forum, we offer you the opportunity to get close to Svalbard and the wild nature through trips by snowmobile or dog sled. We also arrange accommodation in the Temple area and if the weather is with us, we will also have the opportunity to see the aurora borealis.
